University of Akron President Gary L. Miller to speak at Akron Press Club May 19

University of Akron President Gary L. Miller will make his first major speech to the community at the Akron Press Club luncheon program Tuesday, May 19, at the University’s Quaker Station, 135 South Broadway. His speech, “Akron Rising,” will explore the future of the University of Akron in the context of where it is now and the dynamic environments of higher education in America.

Miller became the 18th president of the University on Oct. 1, 2019.

He served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay from 2014 to 2019. Under his leadership, the university established a school of engineering. The university also secured private funding and legislative approval for a STEM Innovation Center and partnered with a local technical college and public high schools to offer all Green Bay high school students access to 15 hours of college credit.

Miller was chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington from 2011 to 2014. He was provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Wichita State University, a dean of the College of the Pacific (arts and sciences) at the University of the Pacific, a faculty member at the University of Mississippi, Weber State University and Mississippi State University. While at Mississippi State he co-authored a widely used textbook, Ecology.

Miller holds a doctorate in biological sciences from Mississippi State University. He earned both a master’s and a bachelor’s in biology from the College of William and Mary.

He and his wife, Georgia Nix Miller, have three grown children.

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public.
