Josh Mandel declines Press Club invitation

A Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate from Ohio has declined an invitation to address the Akron Press Club. Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel is too busy to speak at the Press Club, according to his political director.
Mandel is running against incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown in the 2012 November election.
The Press Club first extended an invitation to Mandel in May 2011. Representatives from the Press Club worked through the summer to seek an acceptable date for the Mandel campaign and learned in December that he would not be available for any date.
The Press Club extended the same invitation to Brown, who has accepted and will appear Jan. 6 (reservation information is available at www.akronpressclub.org).
In 2009, the Akron Press Club invited all declared candidates for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by George Voinovich to speak. All four candidates – two Democrats and two Republicans, including eventual winner and current U.S. Sen. Rob Portman – accepted the invitations. All spoke at the Martin Center on the University of Akron campus during the fall of 2009. The luncheon speeches were co-sponsored with the University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics, which also is co-sponsoring the appearances in 2012.
In 2010, the state chairs of both political parties – Democrat Chris Redfern and Republican Kevin DeWine – spoke to Press Club audiences.
“The Press Club is proud to provide a non-partisan forum for political leaders to reach out to the Akron community,” said Press Club President Bruce Winges. “We are disappointed that Josh Mandel is unable to participate in this forum.”

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events. Visit www.akronpressclub.org for membership information.

Senate Bill 5 panel discussion Oct. 20

A panel discussion of Ohio Senate Bill 5 will be held at the Akron Press Club’s luncheon on Thursday, October 20, at the University of Akron’s Martin Center. There will be the opportunity for questions from the audience
Ohio lawmakers passed Senate Bill 5 March 31 following protests that packed the Statehouse. The law bans strikes by public employees and eliminates binding arbitration and the ability of public workers to bargain for sick pay and pension benefits. Public union members would be required to contribute at least 10 percent toward their pensions and 15 percent toward their health insurance. Unions could still bargain for wages, hours, terms and conditions and, in some cases, safety equipment.
An effort to repeal the law is on the November ballot.
The panelists will analyze how the bill became law and assess the upcoming vote. The panelists are:
• Molly Bloom, a Kent-based reporter for a collaboration among WKSU, WCPN, WOSU and NPR.
• Dr. Stephen C. Brooks, associate director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.
• Doug Oplinger, managing editor of the Akron Beacon Journal
The panel will be moderated by M.L. Schultze, news director of WKSU and an Akron Press Club board member.

Celebrate the Press Club’s 40th birthday

After four decades of lunches, speeches, auctions, scholarship fund-raisers, book sales and good times we are ready to celebrate the Akron Press Club’s 40th birthday. The Press Club board invites present members, past members and those who have been connected with the organization over the years to join us for a birthday bash at the club’s long-time home, the Martin Center on the University of Akron campus.
The Press Club started when some like-minded individuals got together at their favorite watering hole, the Mayflower Hotel Bar. The first official meeting was in January 1971 where, according to Press Club archives, Jerry Healey of WAKR was elected president.
Through the years the Press Club has provided a forum for a number of newsmakers, politicians and other speakers to reach out to the Akron community. It has held numerous fund-raisers and dinners.
The club has made significant contributions to young journalists and public relations professionals through its unwavering support of scholarships. That support continues with the John S. Knight and Ludel Sauvageot scholarships. An additional scholarship was awarded in 2011 in the name of the Press Club.
Join us for dinner and an evening of fellowship and a memorable evening on Saturday, November 12. The dinner will be held at the Martin Center at the University of Akron. Cost is $35 per person.
Reservations may be made by calling 330-564-4211.
And if you have any photos or other Press Club memorabilia that you would like to share, contact board members Ron Syroid, (rlsyroid@gmail.com or Ed Kalail (ekalail1@neo.rr.com) .
Watch our web site for additional information as it becomes available.

Welcome to the new Akron Press Club web site

If you are reading these words, then you are looking at the Press Club’s redesigned web site.

Board members have been working for some time to make this much-needed change to update our web site.

The new site allows us to publish information more easily and in a more timely manner. We also now offer a newsletter signup for emails from the Press Club. In the near future we will add a PayPal feature so we can accept credit cards for membership dues and lunches.

The web site still is under construction, so you may see some rough spots that have not been smoothed.

We are working on fall programming, some of which depends on the outcome of the Sept. 13 primary. We also are putting together a possible Issue 2/Senate Bill 5 panel and hoping to hear from candidates who are in the running for the 2012 U.S. Senate seat from Ohio.

We will have our annual book sale in early November. Our 40th anniversary dinner is scheduled for Nov. 12.

Thanks, Bruce Winges
president
