Jon Husted to speak at Akron Press Club June 4

Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted will speak at the Akron Press Club lunch on Wednesday, June 4. Lunch will be at 11:45 a.m. and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions.
This event is co-sponsored with The University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.
Husted was elected secretary of state in 2010. The Republican is running for re-election to the office this fall. In the 2012 election, Husted sent out absentee ballots to all Ohio voters. He also was criticized for his role in enforcing a law limiting in person early-voting to military officers and overseas residents during the last three days preceding election day. Husted ultimately ordered all county boards to allow for early voting during the final weekend.
He was elected to the Ohio House in 2000. Four years later Husted was elected speaker of the House. As speaker Husted was instrumental in passing a fiscally-conservative budget that included the largest income tax cut in Ohio’s history. He also led the passage of a school choice option plan a scholarship program to encourage students studying in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine.
After two terms as speaker, Husted was elected to the Ohio Senate He advocated reforming how Ohio’s legislative and congressional districts are drawn.
Husted is from Montpelier, He attended the University of Dayton, where he earned All-American Defensive Back honors as a member of the 1989 Division III national championship football team. He served as vice president of business and economic development at the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Husted and his wife, Tina, have three children.

Ohio Treasurer candidate Connie Pillich will speak at the Akron Press Club lunch Sept. 15.

Ed FitzGerald to speak at Akron Press Club May 21

Ed FitzGerald, Cuyahoga County Executive and a Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate, will speak at the Akron Press Club lunch on Wednesday, May 21. Lunch will be at 11:45 a.m. and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions.

This event is co-sponsored with The University of Akron’s Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics.

Following widespread scandal, residents of Cuyahoga County voted in 2009 to change from a county commission to a county executive and council form of government. In 2010, FitzGerald was voted the county’s first executive. He instituted a number of reforms that included a strict code of ethics. He also shrunk the size of government and put in place a community policing unit and a scholarship program to encourage college education.

FitzGerald graduated from the Ohio State University in 1990 and obtained a law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1993. In 1995, FitzGerald was commissioned as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was assigned to Chicago, where he participated in investigations of political corruption and organized crime in Cicero.

In 1998, FitzGerald returned to Ohio and later joined the Cuyahoga County prosecutor’s office. In 1999, he was elected to the Lakewood city council. In 2007, he was elected mayor of Lakewood.

He and his wife, Shannon, have four children, ages 13-19.

Steve LaTourette to speak April 22

Steve LaTourette, a former member of Congress from Ohio who currently is a lobbyist, will speak at the Akron Press Club lunch on Tuesday, April 22. Lunch will be at 11:45 a.m. and the program will follow. There will be the opportunity for questions.

LaTourette is president of McDonald Hopkins Government Strategies, a Washington-based subsidiary of McDonald Hopkins LLC that “provides strategic counsel at the federal government level,” according to its website. He also is president of the Republican Main Street Partnership, which is “dedicated to supporting a pragmatic, fiscally conservative ‘governing majority’ where political debate is encouraged to promote solutions to improve the lives of all Americans,” according to its website.

He served 18 years in Congress representing the 14th and 19th districts in Northeast Ohio until he retired in 2012. He served on the Financial Services Committee and three subcommittees: Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD); Interior, Environment and Related Agencies; and Legislative Branch. He served 14 years on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

LaTourette is a former Lake County prosecutor. He has a Juris Doctor from Cleveland State University, Cleveland Marshall College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in history form the University of Michigan.
