Lieberth retired in December as Akron’s deputy mayor after 10 years. He also has been a journalist, practicing lawyer, master of ceremonies and served on nonprofit boards.

Lieberth is credited with turning the Lock 3 and Lock 4 parks into big draws for hundreds of thousands of people attending downtown concerts and other events.

He began his career in the late 1960s reporting for WHLO radio, where he became news director. He graduated from law school, started his own firm and after years as a domestic relations lawyer and mediator, he became Mayor Don Plusquellic’s chief of staff in 2002.

Downtown transformation was his top priority. He told the Beacon Journal that, at the time, “Downtown was a mess…. There was nothing happening. It felt unsafe. There was nothing to bring people downtown.”
