Ludel B. Sauvageot Scholarship

The Ludel B. Sauvageot Scholarship recognizes the Akron Press Club's late friend, member, teacher and public relations professional. Mrs. Sauvageot, who died on April 18, 1996, was a well-known and respected professional in the areas public relations, communication, and journalism communities for more than 65 years.

An award-winning journalist, author, and educator, Mrs. Sauvageot was a long-time Akron General Medical Center Womans Board member and trustee of the American Heart Association. In 1946, her vision led to the establishment of the first public relations department for an Ohio hospital at Akron General Medical Center. She was named the department's first director.

The author of four books, she was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame in 1990.

Married to the late Dr. J. Paul Sauvageot, Akrons first cardiologist and founder of the Akron chapter of the American Heart Association, she is survived by sons Andre and Jules, her daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Scholarship provides $3,000 and is awarded as part of the John S. Knight annual scholarship program at a luncheon sponsored by the Akron Press Club each April.

John S. Knight Scholarship

Throughout his 67-year career as a reporter, editor, columnist, and publisher, John S. Knight called Akron and the Akron Beacon Journal his home. From Akron, he launched a company that became Knight-Ridder, a well-known leader in the media industry.

The Akron Press club honors the memory of John S. Knight by being a major contributor to the John S. Knight Memorial Journalism Fund. Five $3,000 scholarships are awarded annually to students who excell in journalism, public relations and communications programs at colleges and universities. Funds raised from the Press Club’s on-going fund raising efforts, including an annual book sale held on the first Saturday of November, help to support these scholarships, which are awarded at a special luncheon each April.
