A total of nine students are receiving scholarships for $5,000 each from the Akron Press Club and the John S. Knight Journalism Fund. Six area college students were selected for scholarships in memory of longtime Akron Beacon Journal editor John S. Knight and public relations professional Ludel Sauvageot. A seventh student received the Russ Pry scholarship from the Akron Press Club, named in honor of the Summit County executive who died in 2016. He supported the Press Club through his annual State of the County speech. Through the generosity of Aileen Thong, a retired U.S. Army physician, in tribute to her father, the late Louis Gitsin Thong, the Akron Press Club awarded two more scholarships. This year’s Knight scholars are Cameron Gorman, Anna Huntsman and Emma Keating of Kent State University and Abigail Bashor and Allyson Smith of the University of Akron. The Sauvageot scholar is Abigail Winternitz of Kent State. The Russ Pry scholar is Ariel Stahler of Kent State The Thong scholars are John Alfieri of the University of Akron and Henry Palatella of Kent State. The scholars will be recognized at a noon luncheon April 27 at Greystone Hall, 103 S. High St., in downtown Akron. M.L. Schultze, digital editor and reporter/producer at WKSU, will be the guest speaker. Tickets for the lunch, sponsored by the Akron Press Club, are $20. The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public.
