Akron Beacon Journal/BeaconJournal.com Editor Michael Shearer and WKSU News Director Andrew Meyer will talk about the changing Akron media news market during a virtual presentation by the Akron Press Club on Thursday, June 9 at noon.

There will be the opportunity for questions during the discussion.

The journalists will talk about the future for local and regional news coverage. The market has changed as WKSU joined Ideastream Public Media and the Beacon Journal moves toward Gannett’s overall digital-focused strategy. The closing of The Devil Strip also affected the Akron media landscape.

Shearer is editor and market leader for the Akron Beacon Journal/BeaconJournal.com and regional editor for 11 other northern Ohio newsrooms in the USA TODAY Network. He previously served as top editor in Kent and Newark, Ohio.

Meyer helps oversee the daily operations of the WKSU news department, working with its reporters and hosts, coordinating daily coverage and serving as one of its editors.  He also is involved in long-term strategic planning for the station’s news coverage.

Both journalists serve on the Akron Press Club board.

The Akron Press Club has not been able to hold traditional lunch programming during the current pandemic. Funds from these lunches go toward scholarships for journalism and public relations students. Between the Press Club and the John S. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund, scholarships of $5,000 were awarded to 10 students in 2022.

The Press Club acknowledges and thanks the County of Summit, Dr. Aileen Thong and Elizabeth Bartz for their support of the scholarships. You can donate by following the link on the registration page for this event.
