Long-time congressional staffer Jennifer Hoelzer and University of Akron Ray C. Bliss Institute Director Emeritus Dr. John Green will talk politics during a virtual presentation by the Akron Press Club on March 17 at noon. There will be the opportunity for questions.

This Press Club event is co-sponsored by the Bliss Institute.

Green will moderate the discussion, which will cover such topics as:

  • Why does politics divide us?
  • How did wearing face masks become a political football?
  • When did we start judging candidates on their “electability?”

Jennifer Hoelzer is a writer and communications strategist. She has worked in the White House and both houses of Congress. She is known for her ability to make complicated issues interesting and understandable,

Hoelzer left Washington to start an issue-oriented communications practice, where she advised clients on everything from messaging health policy to navigating “Deflategate.” She even consulted on the HBO comedy “Veep.” She eventually studied cognitive science and is working on a book to help readers learn to see through political spin and other efforts to manipulate their judgment.

Hoelzer is a Stow native with a BA in international affairs from George Washington University and a master’s degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.

The Akron Press Club has not been able to hold traditional lunch programming during the current pandemic. Funds from these lunches go toward scholarships for journalism and public relations students. Between the Press Club and the John S. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund, scholarships of $5,000 were awarded to 10 students in 2021. We thank the County of Summit, Dr. Aileen Thong and Elizabeth Bartz for their generous support of our scholarship fund during this time.

As we navigate COVID-19, please consider a donation to the Akron Press Club to fund scholarships. They make a difference to the students who receive them. You can donate by following the link on the registration page for this event.

The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of offering newsmakers a forum to discuss issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations students.
