University of Akron President Dr. Gary L. Miller will address the Greater Akron community at the Akron Press Club luncheon program Thursday, September 7, at Quaker Station. There will be the opportunity for questions from the audience.

Miller became the 18th president of the university on October 1, 2019.

Upon arriving he led an academic redesign and filled open positions. He also took on decade-long budget issues. A six-year contract with UA faculty was negotiated in 2021.

During the university’s sesquicentennial, Miller launched a campus-wide strategic planning process to reinvest in the university’s areas of strength, create new programs and opportunities to earn degrees and chart a path toward the future.

In 2021, the UA Board of Trustees Miller’s contract through June 2027.  

Miller served as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay from 2014 to 2019. Miller was chancellor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington from 2011 to 2014. He was provost and vice president for academic affairs and research at Wichita State University, a dean of the College of the Pacific (arts and sciences) at the University of the Pacific, a faculty member at the University of Mississippi, Weber State University and Mississippi State University. While at Mississippi State he co-authored a widely used textbook, “Ecology.”

Miller holds a doctorate in biological sciences from Mississippi State University. He received master’s and bachelor’s degrees in biology from the College of William and Mary. He and his wife, Georgia Nix Miller, enjoy the arts and outdoor activities. They have three adult children and five grandchildren.

Cancellations: Cancellation requests must be received no later than 48 hours before the event. After that time, there will be no refunds and an invoice will be issued for payment.

Proceeds from Akron Press Club events fund scholarships for journalism and public relations students. Between the Press Club and the John S. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund, scholarships of $5,000 were awarded to 10 students in 2023.
