About the speaker

Steve L. Herman is chief national correspondent for the Voice of America. In “Behind the White House Curtain,” Herman argues that public access to accurate, unbiased information is essential to a healthy and peaceful democracy, and that journalists play a key role in holding government officials accountable. He learned to be skeptical of government officials’ statements when he worked as a reporter covering nuclear testing in Nevada in the 1970s.

During the Trump administration, journalists were called “enemies of the people.” The former president singled out VOA, accusing the organization of being not a voice of America but rather a voice supporting Moscow’s and Beijing’s interests. Under questionable circumstances, top VOA executives lost their security clearances, and a dossier was prepared on Herman in an effort to remove him as White House bureau chief.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear from Steven L. Herman and engage in a meaningful discussion on the importance of a free press and the challenges journalists face today. We look forward to seeing you there!
