About NEOMED President Dr. John Langell
Dr. John Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., is a nationally recognized leader in academic medicine, healthcare innovation, and surgical practice. As the seventh president of Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) and NEOMED Health Care, he is driving a vision to strengthen Ohio’s healthcare workforce, expand access to care, and advance community health through strategic partnerships. Under his leadership, NEOMED has significantly expanded academic programs, established new statewide affiliations, and launched transformative initiatives in artificial intelligence, digital health, medical technology innovation, and population health.
A board-certified surgeon, serial entrepreneur, and former U.S. Air Force officer, Dr. Langell has made significant contributions to minimally invasive surgery, medical device development, and health system innovation. He has secured millions of dollars in research funding, authored numerous publications, and holds multiple patents for medical technologies that improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs.
Throughout his career, he has built bridges between academia, industry, and government, driving initiatives that accelerate commercialization, foster entrepreneurship, and deliver practical solutions to healthcare’s most complex challenges.
Previously, Dr. Langell served as vice dean for innovation and executive director of the center for medical innovation at the University of Utah. As founder of the University of Utah Center for Medical Innovation. Dr. Langell pioneered a model for advancing clinician-led innovation and technology transfer. His work helped create over 150 new technologies, 50+ startups, and more than 100 intellectual property filings. He also founded The Therapeutic Games and Applications Lab, advancing digital health tools and clinical simulations contributing to the university’s No. 1 national rankings in entrepreneurship and commercialization. He is now applying these principles to build a vibrant innovation ecosystem in Ohio, improving health and inspiring the next generation of health profession innovators.
Dr. Langell holds a B.S. from UCLA, M.D. and Ph.D. from Drexel, and completed his surgical residency at Stanford and a space medicine residency at NASA/UTMB. He continues clinical practice at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, specializing in acute care surgery.
